BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

PAY’s Cycling Program started in April 21st 2007 and since then has progressed and improved immensely. The team has now developed into five separate categories including the Elite Team (19 and above), Junior Boys (16-19 years old), Junior Girls (16-19 years old), the Under 16 (14-16 years old) and the Under 14 team. Each team has been a part of many successes in the sport of cycling. Members from the Elite Team, such as Laban, Fiffy and Nghilifa are the coaches of the cycling program for the younger age groups. Each team trains extremely hard to improve their skill level as well as better prepare them for a variety of different competitions.

GOALS OF THE PROGRAM:

The goals of the cycle program are as followed:

  • To compete and cycle at national level
  • To instill values such as hard work, responsibility and commitment
  • To train to become Olympic hopefuls or Commonwealth competitors
  • To be competitive in every race the team enters while remembering to have fun
  • To be able to compete in long distance as well as short distance races

THE FUTURE OF THE TEAM:

Recently the Cycling Team has been competing in not only cycling races but expanding to biathlon and duathlon competitions. The Cycling Team has made it their number one goal to compete at a National level and hopefully represent Namibia in the Olympics. Five of our athletes will be attending this year’s Olympics as spectators but we hope to see them competing in Rio 2016 as respected Olympic athletes. With all this being said, in order to reach our next step, despite our many successes, the PAY cycling team needs to gain more resources, bikes and financial support to bring this program to an even higher level of excellence.
